200 Thousand Laptop for Children Gaza

United Nations Mission in the Gaza Strip began distributing thousands of portable computers (laptops) in children in Gaza. Laptops are made by a nonprofit organization, One Laptop Per Child, an organization which aims to provide a computer for each child in developing countries.

Today, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) began distributing laptops 2100 in Rafah, a town in the south of the Hamas-controlled channels. The total number of laptops for all of the Gaza Strip area 200 thousand units. This program is part of the ambition to distribute 500 thousand laptops for children in Gaza in 2010.

As quoted from the page of BBC television, "One Laptop Per Child" says the computer is a great way to improve the education of children who live in poverty. According to the UN, the humanitarian conditions in Gaza have fallen so drastically in the last three years.

"XO Laptops make kids can connect with each other and gain the skills and knowledge required to fully participate in and face the 21st century," said the organization's founder, Nicholas Negroponte.

Israel blockaded Gaza and Egypt, which was then tightened in 2007 after Hamas took over Gaza Strip. Allowed only humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip. (Jon)
